At first glance, it seems the desire to grow houseplants is driven by a wish to make the home environment cozier since the aesthetic component of house-planting is hard to overemphasize. 

But, there are also scientifically proven benefits of having house plants, ranging from stress reduction, help with depression, positive effects on positivity and concentration, and air purification.

5 Benefits of House Plants

A deeper analysis leads to a discussion of at least five scientifically valid reasons people grow plants. 

1. Houseplants significantly reduce perceived stress levels and create an atmosphere of comfort and safety for humans, as shown by research. 

2. Plants have a concentration effect and having houseplants helps people retain attention and concentration better. 

3. Similar results have been true for productivity and studies have shown that having plants at home increases that. 

4. Plants have been shown to effectively combat symptoms of depression and anxiety. 

5. The ecological effect of plant farming cannot be ruled out since, through photosynthesis, plants help to fight air pollution in the home. 

If house plants can help with stress levels, battle depression, and increase productivity, what are the effects of an unhealthy house plant on humans? It’s important to consider the effect of an unhealthy or struggling plant on your mental health. 

It’s clear that all of these benefits can be mitigated, and, in fact, the opposite effect of house plants causing detrimental emotional harm to our well being can occur. A plant struggling to survive increases stress, negates all of the potential positive mental health benefits, and even creates a negative emotional experience through the pain of it’s current state.

It’s easy to become attached to our house plants, and watching your house plant lose its leaves and die is a terrible experience. The biodiversity of ecosystems is unlimited, and one encounters different members of the plant community every day. Trees, shrubs, grasses, and flowerbeds form a unique biological diversity of harmoniously related individuals with balanced metabolism and resources. Competition mechanisms are established between such plants, and the processes of natural selection are in full force. 

However, the survival requirements for house plants, which initially exist under human-supported conditions, are significantly different. Because of the constant artificial addition of nutrients and fertilizers, houseplants are often more demanding to the conditions.
